About this Map
Crossing the River centers an encounter on the water itself rather than treating a river as decorative scenery. Fast current and uneven banks divide the battlefield into difficult approaches, forcing characters to decide where to enter, how long to remain exposed and whether reaching the far side is worth abandoning safer footing. Vegetation and natural terrain along the banks provide staging areas, but the open channel leaves anyone in the water conspicuous.
In Strength of Thousands: Hurricane's Howl, the crossing can be complicated by a dangerous hippo, turning a simple travel obstacle into a contest over movement and timing. A GM can use the same layout for a ford under attack, a rescue in swift water or any wilderness scene where combatants cannot simply ignore the river between them. The map stays easy to read while making one feature matter on almost every turn.
