About this Map
The Beast's Den is a deep natural lair shaped around the needs of something enormous. Broad caverns connect through narrower passages, with bones, disturbed earth and rough terrain making the scale of the resident creature visible before it appears. The layout gives a large monster room to move without reducing the encounter to one empty circular chamber.
For a GM, the den supports a hunt that can become a running battle. Narrow approaches make the party vulnerable on entry, larger chambers allow the creature to use its size, and side spaces provide places for evidence, remains or secondary threats. In Kingmaker, the location is tied to the enormous owlbear that threatens the heroes' growing realm. The map therefore works best as the end of a pursuit: the party has found the creature's home, but entering it means fighting on terrain the beast knows better than they do.
