About this Map
Sootscale Caverns are a cramped kobold warren carved into rough stone, with branching tunnels, makeshift timber supports, cages, storage niches, and uneven chambers packed tightly beneath the earth. Rather than presenting a clean dungeon grid, the caves feel inhabited and adapted over time, with narrow routes forcing characters through spaces built for smaller creatures and defensive positions.
The map is especially useful for encounters where movement and negotiation matter as much as raw combat. Bottlenecks make a frontal assault costly, side passages create opportunities for flanking or retreat, and the different chambers let the GM separate guards, prisoners, supplies, and important NPCs without inventing extra rooms. In Kingmaker the caverns belong to the Sootscale kobolds and their troubled situation in the Stolen Lands. Removed from that context, the same layout works as a goblin den, mining camp, smuggler cave, or any subterranean settlement where its inhabitants know the tunnels far better than intruders do.
